Who is NCP MLA Sana Malik, whose statement on polygamy created an uproar, what did she say on Quran and Pakistan?

In Maharashtra politics, a controversy has arisen over a statement by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Ajit Pawar faction MLA Sana Malik. After his statement given in Maharashtra Assembly, discussion of ideological differences has started within the Mahayuti alliance also. Sana Malik demanded implementation of law based on Quran in India, after which there is an uproar over her statement.

Sana Malik expressed her opinion regarding Islamic traditions and triple talaq in the assembly. He said that if any rule is made in any country on the basis of Quran, then a similar demand can be made in India also. Political rhetoric has intensified regarding his statement.

What did Sana Malik say?

Speaking in the Assembly, Sana Malik said, “In Islam, we follow whatever the Quran says. If Pakistan has brought any rule to follow what is said in the Quran, then India should also bring it. We demand it.”

Speaking on triple talaq, he said, “A law was immediately made to abolish triple talaq, while abolishing something which was not our practice. If such a practice is followed and someone opposes it, we do not raise our voice against that opposition. On the contrary, we follow the established practice.”

Who is Sana Malik?

Sana Malik was born on 1 January 1986 in Maharashtra. She is the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Ajit Pawar faction and is currently the MLA from Anushakti Nagar assembly seat of Mumbai. She is the daughter of former Maharashtra cabinet minister and senior NCP leader Nawab Malik. In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Ajit Pawar’s NCP had nominated Sana Malik in place of Nawab Malik from Anushakti Nagar seat.

Sana Malik contested and won from Anushakti Nagar seat in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. With this victory he gave a new identity to his political career. Before this, she has also been active in local politics and has been associated with the civic politics of Mumbai.

What did Sana do before coming into politics?

Before coming into politics, Sana Malik had worked as an architect and lawyer by profession. He has acquired education and professional experience in both the fields of law and architecture. He contested his first major election in 2017 as Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporator. After this he made his place in active politics.

What did Sana say while clarifying her statement?

Clarifying her statement, Sana Malik said, “The discussion was mainly about women’s issues, family matters and divorce. During the debate, BJP MLA Devyani Farande, while referring to Pakistan, said that some laws to polygamy are in force there. In response to this, I said that Pakistan’s example should not be taken to guide Indian Muslims. If any guidance has to be given, it should come from the Quran, as Pakistan itself follows principles which are based on Islamic teachings. Therefore, if someone wants to give an example, he should cite the Quran, being a Muslim and an Indian, we do not consider Pakistan as an ideological ideal.

Speaking on this statement of Sana Malik, Maharashtra government minister and BJP MLA Nitish Rane said, “Maybe our sister Sana has forgotten that she is in a Hindu-majority country, is an MLA here and is not sitting in the Parliament of Pakistan.”
