Tottenham Hotspur have intensified their pursuit of 21-year-old Portuguese international Mateus Fernandes, holding simultaneous discussions with both the player’s camp and the West Ham United board in an attempt to finalise a deal that would provide Roberto De Zerbi with a significant boost in midfield.
This swift move from the Spurs hierarchy comes as they attempt to outpace long-standing admirers Manchester United, whose recruitment department at Old Trafford has been in steady contact with Fernandes’ representatives for several months.
Tottenham have now altered the dynamics of the negotiations by showing a clear intent to meet West Ham’s high valuation, while Manchester United are still hesitant to engage in an extended bidding battle.
Fernandes, who initially appeared determined to join Manchester United, is now increasingly receptive to a switch to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
West Ham United are maintaining their firm stance, demanding a fee in the region of £85 million before sanctioning the sale of the central midfielder.
The East London club are keen to maximise returns on a player they brought in from Southampton last summer for £38 million.
Hopes from potential buyers that West Ham’s relegation to the Championship would lower the asking price have been dashed by a recent £90 million capital injection from shareholders.
This substantial financial reinforcement has solidified West Ham’s economic position, enabling them to negotiate any transfer for Fernandes strictly on their own terms.
Despite the club’s disappointing campaign last season, Fernandes’ reputation has grown significantly, drawing attention from top European sides such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, along with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
