Kylian Mbappe has spoken openly about David Beckham’s efforts to influence his next career move.
The French forward revealed that Beckham has tried to convince him to consider a transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS).
The France captain is currently in the United States for the 2026 World Cup and appears to be enjoying his time there, having scored two goals in each of his nation’s first two Group I fixtures against Senegal and Iraq.
These goals have taken Mbappe past Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time leading scorer. He now has 16 World Cup goals to his name — a figure surpassed only by Lionel Messi.
The Real Madrid striker has put behind him a difficult conclusion to the domestic season. He faced jeers from Los Blancos supporters upon his return from injury last month.
Fans were reportedly upset with Mbappe for taking a vacation in Sardinia while recovering from a hamstring problem. A petition calling for the club to part ways with him collected over 95 million signatures, despite the 27-year-old registering an impressive 42 goals across all competitions last season.
The former Paris Saint-Germain forward remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2029, but the growing discontent in the Spanish capital could potentially push him to explore other options.
With Lionel Messi flourishing in the United States with Inter Miami — the MLS club co-owned by Beckham — Mbappe admitted that the English football icon, who also represented Manchester United, Real Madrid, and PSG during his playing days, has already broached the subject of an American move.
When asked if he would consider playing in MLS, Mbappe responded, “We’ll see. David Beckham has mentioned it to me many times.”
He added, “American culture is different; there are no limits to ambition, and I appreciate that.”
Mbappe, who is nine years younger than Messi was when he joined Inter Miami in July 2023, has yet to capture a La Liga or Champions League title. Therefore, a move to the United States in the immediate future would come as a surprise.
Nonetheless, the World Cup has already shown that the French star can be influenced by English celebrities popular in the US. During France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal, Mbappe celebrated his opening goal by miming playing an invisible flute — an idea suggested by television host James Corden during his appearance on the After Hours show.
The France skipper will next take to the field on Friday night when his team faces Norway, led by striker Erling Haaland, in a Group I showdown to determine the top spot (8:00 PM BST kick-off).
