Jude Bellingham has offered a frank reflection on his performance following England’s goalless draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup. Despite being awarded the Player of the Match honour, the Real Madrid midfielder admitted he did not feel worthy of the recognition, suggesting one of Ghana’s defenders should have received it instead for their strong defensive showing in Boston.
The Three Lions’ talisman was at the centre of post-match discussions after Thomas Tuchel’s side struggled to unlock a compact Ghana defence marshalled expertly by former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz. While Bellingham was officially named the standout player, he was quick to downplay the accolade, admitting he had not done enough to justify it after a frustrating night.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Bellingham was refreshingly honest about his feelings. “I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” he said. “It probably should have gone to one of their lads who defended so well. Had a couple of moments, it was hard to get into the game and I’m grateful for whoever voted, but it probably should have gone to one of their lads who defended so well. So fair play to them.”
Despite the disappointment of the result, the evening still carried personal significance for the former Birmingham City prodigy. At 22 years and 359 days old, Bellingham became the youngest player ever to reach 50 caps for England, surpassing the record previously held by Wayne Rooney.
However, the milestone counted for little in the wake of another frustrating draw. “Like always it is second game fever, isn’t it, with England,” Bellingham remarked. The result marked England’s fourth consecutive draw in the second match of a major tournament, a sequence stretching back to their 0-0 result with Scotland at Euro 2020. “Win the first one, do well, and then draw the second one,” he added. “But it’s okay. I think they played for a draw as it would have seen them go through and fair play to them, they did a great job.”
The game was not without its flashpoints. A heated exchange between Bellingham and Queiroz at half-time caught attention after a robust challenge on Jerome Opoku. When asked about the incident, the Ghana coach downplayed it, saying: “It was nothing special. It’s just that emotional moment, the moment he had one word that is not in the book of life. It could create a little bit of fire. But immediately as professionals we pulled up. Football is something for brave people – not for people dancing in tuxedos.” England manager Thomas Tuchel defended his player afterwards, insisting that no one had “got under their skin.”
Bellingham was not the only one who found the match difficult. England’s forwards struggled to trouble Ghana’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare throughout the contest, with captain Harry Kane enduring an especially tough evening. His frustration peaked late in the game when he fired a rebound over the crossbar from close range — a moment that epitomised England’s lack of composure in front of goal.
The draw leaves England at the top of Group L with four points, though they missed the opportunity to confirm their place in the knockout phase early. Tuchel’s men must now avoid defeat against Panama in their final group fixture to secure progression to the Round of 32. The focus will be on rediscovering the attacking sharpness that powered their convincing win over Croatia in the tournament opener.
