‘Newcastle must be laughing!’ – Barcelona told to ‘check if the ink has dried’ on Anthony Gordon’s deal after disappointing World Cup outing for England

Anthony Gordon has come under intense criticism following his lacklustre display in England’s goalless World Cup stalemate with Ghana on Tuesday. The winger’s limited influence in the match has sparked debate among pundits, with some even questioning Barcelona’s recent decision to sign him for a substantial fee. Former players have suggested that Newcastle United may have benefited the most from the summer transfer after witnessing Gordon’s struggles on the international stage.

O'Hara calls for Gordon to be dropped

Gordon started for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the 0-0 draw but was replaced after 65 minutes. Speaking on talkSPORT, Jamie O’Hara offered a blunt assessment of the winger’s performance, insisting that Marcus Rashford deserves to reclaim his place in the starting eleven.

O’Hara commented: “Gordon was poor. I don’t care what anyone says. He was poor, nowhere near it and he’s got to be better. Marcus Rashford has to start. I know there was talk about Rashford having a niggle or whatever, but he came on and made a big impact. You can’t start Gordon over Rashford. Rashford is a better player than Gordon.”

Problems breaking down a compact defence

Explaining Gordon’s inability to make an impact against Ghana, O’Hara highlighted his struggles to penetrate a well-organised defensive setup. The lack of creativity and cutting edge was a major talking point. O’Hara elaborated: “They had a low block, compact, tight, the wingers have got to win you the game. Every time it went to Gordon, he did nothing with it. He’s a good player, I’m not trying to dig him out here, but Rashford’s a better player... he made three things happen in 10 minutes.”

Tuchel now faces the challenge of re-evaluating his attacking strategy ahead of the next fixture, with growing pressure to introduce tactical changes swiftly.

Barcelona’s £70 million move under scrutiny

The focus has also turned towards Barcelona, who completed a £70 million signing of Gordon from Newcastle in May. After his disappointing performance, Gabby Agbonlahor questioned the reasoning behind such a hefty transfer fee.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Agbonlahor said: “If I’m Barcelona, I’m checking if the ink’s dry. £70m for Gordon – Newcastle must be laughing. He wasn’t great last season and he was poor in the first game. How he started and lasted as long as he did... the manager was going crazy on that left-hand side during the game. He just got the ball and looked like he had no tricks. He had a quick full-back against him and he had no ideas.”

What lies ahead for Gordon?

England must regroup quickly before their crucial final group-stage encounter with Panama. Thomas Tuchel’s team need a win to secure the top position, as they currently sit level with Ghana on four points. Gordon now faces an uncertain wait to learn if he will retain his place in the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Barcelona will be closely monitoring their expensive new signing, hoping he rediscovers his spark before the domestic season resumes.
