The building in Lucknow's Aliganj area that became the site of a devastating fire, claiming 15 lives earlier this week, is set to be demolished on July 7. The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) issued a demolition notice to the property owners on Wednesday after investigations revealed serious irregularities in the structure's approval and construction.
According to officials, the building had previously been declared illegal, and a demolition order had been issued in 2016. However, the order was later withdrawn, allowing the structure to remain standing. Following the fatal incident, authorities have revived action against the property.
LDA Vice-Chairman Prathamesh Kumar confirmed that the demolition process will begin on July 7. The building is reportedly owned by Virendra Shukla, who is also associated with the Rameshwaram Institute of Technology and Management.
Criminal Case Registered, Multiple Arrests Made
Police have registered a culpable homicide case in connection with the fire and have arrested four individuals, including building owner Virendra Shukla. The incident has also triggered administrative action, with six LDA officials suspended and notices issued against 18 government officers for alleged negligence and procedural lapses.
Crackdown on Illegal Coaching Centres Begins
In the wake of the tragedy, authorities have launched a wider campaign against coaching institutes and commercial establishments operating without adequate safety measures.
LDA teams have sealed several coaching centres, including Allen and Motion Graphics in Hazratganj, as well as Paramount Coaching in Kapurthala. Officials cited violations related to building layouts and inadequate fire safety arrangements as reasons for the action.
SIT and Forensic Teams Continue Investigation
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) and forensic experts visited the fire site on Tuesday to examine the circumstances that led to the disaster. The SIT, comprising IPS officer Praveen Kumar and IAS officer Amrit Abhijat, collected evidence and conducted a detailed inspection of the building.
Investigators are examining whether violations of safety norms, unauthorized modifications, or administrative lapses contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Building Housed Multiple Commercial Establishments
The fire-ravaged building was a mixed-use commercial property located in the busy Aliganj locality. The basement, ground floor, and first floor housed a pet shop and a medical clinic. The second floor accommodated a coaching library known as Learning Space, along with Head Hopper Studio, a company involved in 3D art production and game asset outsourcing.
Authorities are expected to submit a comprehensive report once the investigation is completed.
