The FIFA World Cup 2026 has completed 48 matches so far, and with 48 teams participating, it is the biggest edition of the tournament ever compared to the last FIFA World Cup in 2022 in which 32 teams played. The competition has already seen five teams getting eliminated after disappointing performances in their opening two group-stage matches.
Here are the five teams whose elimination came earlier than the heated round-up battle:
HaitiPlaying in only their second FIFA World Cup, Haiti endured a disappointing campaign as they were the first team to get eliminated form the FIFA World Cup 2026. The side failed to score in either of their first two matches, losing 0-1 to Scotland and 0-3 to Brazil. Haiti will look to end its tournament on a positive note when it takes on Mexico in its final group game, which is a dead rubber for them.
TurkeyTurkey's group-stage exit has come as a major surprise. The side suffered a 0-2 defeat to Australia in its opening match before going down 0-1 against Paraguay. Consecutive losses sealed Turkey's early elimination from the tournament from group D. The team will now face co-hosts USA in its final group-stage fixture on June 26.
TunisiaTunisia's campaign began with a crushing 1-5 defeat in their opening match against Sweden. The result led to the dismissal of head coach Sabri Lamouchi, with Herve Renard taking charge thereafter. However, there was little improvement as Tunisia conceded four more goals in their second match against Japan, while once again failing to find the back of the net. Tunisia's last group fixture is against Netherlands on June 26.
PanamaPanama's World Cup journey ended early after back-to-back 0-1 defeats against Ghana and Croatia. Making only their second appearance at the tournament after 2018, Panama failed to progress beyond the group stage. They will now hope to sign off with a consolation victory against England.
JordanJordan, another tournament debutant, also missed out on a place in the round of 32. Drawn in a difficult group featuring Austria, Algeria and defending champions Argentina, Jordan was always facing an uphill task. The Al-Nashama lost 1-3 to Austria and 1-2 to Algeria, ending their hopes of progression. They will play their final group-stage match against Argentina and aim to exit the tournament with pride.
Meanwhile, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, the USA, Argentina, France and Norway are the seven teams that have already secured qualification for the round of 32 from the 12 groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage.
