Apple seems to be finally stepping into the foldable category after months of consistent leaks surfaced online. And if true, the device will be named as Apple iPhone Ultra and will directly compete with the Galaxy Z Fold series, Moto Razr Fold, Vivo X Fold and Google Pixel Fold series.
The leaks even suggest that the device will be a little different and will have a wide, book-style foldable that opens horizontally into a mini-tablet. But, if the reports are believed to be true, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be standing in its way with a similar form factor.
However, both devices may play around with different selling points. Apple is reportedly focusing on extreme thinness, battery efficiency and crease reduction, while Samsung is said to continue prioritizing productivity features, multitasking and camera. Here is a closer look at how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Apple iPhone Ultra could compare.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra vs Apple iPhone Ultra: Design and display
The leaks suggest that the Apple iPhone Ultra may use a passport-style chassis that unfolds into a large 7.8-inch display. The reports also suggest that the device could measure around 4.5mm when unfolded.
On the other hand, Samsung is said to offer the same wider 4:3-style internal display measuring around 7.6 inches. Both of these devices will aim to offer better user experience- make apps feel more natural and improve reading, browsing and document handling.
In terms of design, Apple is said to be developing a liquid metal hinge system combined with an internal stress distribution layer designed to make the crease nearly invisible. Samsung, on the other hand, is expected to use advanced ultra-thin glass technology with a thickness of around 60 microns to further reduce crease visibility.
Performance and battery
The report suggests that the Apple iPhone Ultra is said to debut with a next-generation A20 Pro processor built on TSMC's 2nm manufacturing process. The device may deliver better performance while reducing power consumption.
Samsung is said to power the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset built on a 3nm process. The device may come paired with up to 16GB of RAM, compared to the iPhone Ultra's expected 12GB memory configuration.
Speaking of the battery capacity, the Apple iPhone Ultra may get a battery between 5,500mAh and 5,800mAh despite its slim body. Samsung, meanwhile, retained the traditional battery design with a capacity between 4,800mAh and 5,000mAh. With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, users can get faster 45W wired charging, while Apple is expected to remain closer to the 30W mark.
Camera
Apple is said to be planning to offer only two rear cameras. It may include a 48MP primary sensor and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. While it is not confirmed, the addition of telephoto lenses might be reserved for the next generation.
Samsung is said to bring a more versatile camera system. It may include a high-resolution primary camera, an ultra-wide lens and a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera. Some reports suggest the primary sensor could reach 200MP, much like the Z Fold 7 and Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Adding on, the fingerprint security may also differ. Apple may drop Face ID on the foldable and return to a side-mounted Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button. Samsung is expected to continue using a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Software and multitasking
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is said to launch with Android 17 and One UI 9. It may bring some new Galaxy AI features and retain a persistent taskbar, desktop-like multitasking tools, floating app windows, S Pen support and the ability to run three apps simultaneously in split-screen mode.
On the other hand, Apple may launch its foldable device with iOS 27. It may bring native split-screen multitasking to an iPhone for the first time. The software is also expected to integrate Apple Intelligence features deeply into the foldable experience.
Which one looks promising?
As per the latest leaks, the Apple iPhone Ultra is said to focus on some of the biggest compromises in foldables, including the thickness, battery efficiency, and crease visibility. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, meanwhile, may still be the multitasker that can help you in your daily tasks, entertainment and clicking good pictures.
For Apple, this iPhone Ultra can become one of the most important hardware launches in years. And for power users who rely on advanced multitasking and mature foldable software, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra may still remain the benchmark when it arrives. However, these are based on leaks and we will be doing a detailed comparison when both of the devices launch (obviously, if it does).
