Lionel Messi’s two-goal performance powered Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Austria in their Group J clash at the World Cup, but what stood out most for coach Lionel Scaloni was his captain’s dedication and work rate off the ball. The Albiceleste boss lauded Messi’s leadership and influence, while cautioning that the journey to defend their World Cup crown will remain demanding despite their promising start.
Argentina overcome Austria with Messi at the forefront
Argentina earned a crucial Group J win over Austria at Dallas Stadium, with Messi netting both goals in a 2-0 triumph. Although his finishing proved pivotal, Scaloni drew attention to another aspect of the veteran forward’s game that particularly impressed him.
The Argentine coach highlighted Messi’s defensive effort in the lead-up to the opening goal, noting that his willingness to press and recover possession continues to inspire his teammates. Despite Ralf Rangnick’s Austria adopting a physical and disruptive approach, Scaloni’s side displayed composure and resilience to maintain their momentum in the competition.
Scaloni commends Messi’s leadership and influence
Speaking after the match, Scaloni emphasised the profound effect Messi has on the rest of the squad. The Argentina manager also spoke about the growing belief surrounding their title defence campaign.
“When Leo gets going, everyone gets going, and that’s a credit to the team,” Scaloni said, as quoted by TyC Sports. “Even when the team was struggling, he worked tirelessly, he won the ball back for the goal, he was committed. That’s what he brings—it’s incredible. I don’t know what else to add, and I don’t know if words do it justice.”
“The fans are thrilled to see this team, to see how they compete and enjoy themselves. There are many teams capable of becoming world champions, and it’s going to be a battle. Some of the big sides will win, we’ll be in the mix too, but it will be tough for everyone,” he added.
Argentina’s growing confidence and areas for improvement
Although Argentina claimed all three points, Scaloni admitted the performance was not perfect. He compared the encounter with Austria to their earlier match against Algeria, acknowledging that challenges remain.
“It was similar to the match against Algeria—another opponent with quality players who made it difficult and were physically strong. There are things we need to fix, but winning makes it easier to improve,” Scaloni commented. “I believe that even when the opposition tried to complicate things for us, I’m not sure that superiority resulted in many shots on goal.”
Looking ahead to the final group fixture
Having already secured qualification to the round of 32, Messi and his teammates will now turn their attention to their final Group J game against Jordan at Dallas Stadium on Sunday. With progression assured, Scaloni is expected to rotate his squad, offering opportunities to players such as Giuliano Simeone, Nico Paz, and Valentin Barco to start.
