Skincare Mistakes: From lemon and honey face packs to easy home remedies going viral on social media, people are adopting it. Many people are using them as a quick, natural and cheap beauty treatment.

But it is not necessary that every solution is right for your face every time. There are many home made face packs or masks which harm our skin in the long run.

No damage to skin barrier

Our skin barrier is the body’s first layer of protection. It keeps irritants out and keeps moisture in. Using baking soda, essential oils and rough scrubs can remove this protective layer.

When the skin barrier is broken, the skin becomes more sensitive. This can also cause dryness and infection in the skin. It is very difficult for the skin to heal completely after damage. It may take months to heal.

Chemical burn with natural ingredients

Any product is not good just because it is natural, nor is it right to apply it directly on the face. Lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, garlic, and turmeric are some commonly used household ingredients, but they are highly acidic. If you keep your skin in contact with these for too long, you may suffer from chemical burns, redness, blisters and pigmentation (spots). Many people take the initial tingling sensation as a sign that the remedy is working, when it is actually just a warning not to use the ingredient on your skin.

Photosensitivity and dark spots

Some home remedies make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Citrus masks, essential oils, and at-home peeling treatments may cause photosensitivity. This means that even brief exposure to the sun can result in tanning, sunburn or stubborn dark spots.

Bacterial and Fungal Infections

Due to the absence of preservatives in homemade skin care products, they spoil very quickly, even if stored in the refrigerator. Due to this, bacteria or fungus can come in direct contact with the skin. In people whose skin already has acne or cuts, this infection can lead to worsening of acne, rashes, itching or painful wounds.

Not every home remedy is harmful, but skincare is a process that is not the same for everyone. It is very important to do a patch test, be careful about the quantity and understand your skin type.
