Manchester United are gearing up for a major overhaul in midfield this summer.
With Brazilian midfielder Casemiro departing the club to join Inter Miami, the Red Devils are now faced with a significant gap to fill at the heart of the pitch.
Manuel Ugarte, who has struggled to impress, is also expected to leave during the transfer window, with United reportedly lowering his asking price to facilitate a move.
In addition, the Old Trafford side have reached an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson to reinforce their midfield depth.
However, the club’s recruitment drive doesn’t stop there. Manchester United are currently in talks with West Ham United over Mateus Fernandes as they look to further strengthen their options in the centre of the park.
Other names being discussed by Michael Carrick’s team include AFC Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Another potential target is Southampton’s Shea Charles, though other clubs seem to be making greater progress in pursuing the Northern Ireland international.
Recent reports revealed that United’s Championship rivals Leeds United had submitted a £20 million bid for Charles.
However, journalist Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Southampton were not persuaded by that offer and have turned it down.
In an update shared on X, Jacobs stated: “Leeds bid was rejected. However, talks are ongoing.”
He further explained that “Southampton’s valuation of Shea Charles is significantly higher” than the £20 million that was proposed.
It remains uncertain whether Manchester United will decide to enter the race for the midfielder or focus their efforts on other targets as June draws to a close.
Charles has made 76 appearances for Southampton, scoring six goals. On the international stage, he has been capped 35 times for Northern Ireland and has even captained the side on occasion.
