The story of Chaturmas is said to be related to King Bali. According to the legend, King Bali was the king of demons. He had snatched power from Indra and started ruling the universe. Then all the gods took refuge in Lord Vishnu. After this Lord Lia took Vaman incarnation. This incarnation of God is believed to be of a dwarf Brahmin. In this incarnation, God reached the yagya of King Bali and asked for three steps of land from him. King Bali resolved to give three steps of land to Lord Vaman.

Then Lord Vaman measured the entire earth in the first step and the entire sky in the second step. When there was no room left for the third step, King Bali put his head forward and prayed to God to place his step on his head. Then Lord Vishnu came in his true form and became pleased and made King Bali the king of the underworld. Also asked to ask for a boon. Then Bali said to Lord Vishnu that whenever I wake up from sleep, I should see you personally. You protect the underworld from its enemies.

Lord Vishnu gave this boon to King Bali and went to the underworld with him. Here, when Lord Shri Hari Vishnu did not return to Vaikuntha for a long time, Mother Lakshmi became worried. Then Narad ji told the solution to Goddess Lakshmi. Then Goddess Lakshmi reached the house of King Bali on the day of Shravan Purnima. First he tied Rakhi to her. After that told the whole thing. Mother asked King Bali to send the Lord back to Vaikuntha Dham.

After this, King Bali freed Lord Vishnu from his boon. Then God blessed King Bali and said that I will reside in the underworld in Chaturmas. This is the reason why Lord Vishnu resides in the underworld during the four months of Chaturmas.
