AI Ban in Norway: Norway has banned the use of AI tools in classrooms for children under the age of 13. Norway has become the first country to impose such a ban.
AI Ban In Norway: Children in Norway will not be able to use AI tools
AI Ban In Norway: After social media, now AI chatbots are also being banned for children. Norway has started this by banning generative AI tools in classrooms for children from first to seventh grade. Usually, such children are up to 13 years of age. The government has announced that children from grades one to seven will not be given access to generative AI tools. This order will come into effect from September this year. It should be noted that countries including England and Australia have previously banned social media for children under the age of 15-16 .
Why was AI banned?
The Norwegian government says this ban has been imposed to protect children's foundational learning skills. The government believes that AI can help children in their studies in some cases, but young children should first learn reading, writing, and math without the help of AI. Research has shown that the indiscriminate use of generative AI in schools risks skipping crucial stages of children's learning and also denies them the critical thinking skills necessary to use AI responsibly.
What are the rules for children over 13?
The ban on AI tools applies to children under the age of 13, but children older than that will not receive free access. Students over the age of 13 will be able to use AI tools, but their use will be monitored. School teachers will also receive training on AI. It's worth noting that mobile phones are already banned in schools here. Now, following the ban on AI, preparations are underway to also block social media for children under the age of 16.
Canada is also preparing to ban AI chatbots.
Like Norway, Canada is preparing to ban social media and AI chatbots for children . New legislation will be introduced to do this. The government says that social media platforms and AI chatbots are designed to keep users constantly engaged, and this negatively impacts children's mental health.
