Michael Olise, one of the brightest wingers in world football representing Bayern Munich and France, has made a revelation that may surprise many – playing on the wing is not his favourite position. The 24-year-old, who is currently impressing at the 2026 World Cup, admitted that he feels most at home and natural when playing centrally as a classic number 10.
A surprising choice of position
Although Olise has thrilled fans with his performances on the right wing for both club and country, the dynamic forward confessed that his true passion lies in a central role. Bayern Munich have greatly benefited from his outstanding contributions since his €53 million move from Crystal Palace in July 2024.
Since joining the German champions, Olise has made 107 appearances, scoring 42 goals and delivering 54 assists. However, in a conversation with French publication L'Équipe, the 24-year-old admitted that he prefers orchestrating play from the middle of the pitch.
Explaining his favourite position, Olise said: "Where do I feel most comfortable? I think it’s as a number 10. It’s a freer role. I grew up playing as a number 10. So for me, it feels more natural. Well, maybe not at the moment, because I’m playing on the wing today, but I think that’s what feels most natural to me."
Roots in street football
Olise’s unpredictable and creative playing style was not solely honed through structured academy training. Instead, he credits his flair and inventiveness to his early days playing informal street football.
He told L'Équipe: "I’d say it comes from street football. We’d play outside with my brother, kicking the ball against the wall, doing 1v1s and all that. I’d say it comes from there, yes. It’s a different kind of football, but it’s definitely a way to learn." That informal start has served him well, helping him develop into a player who has already scored seven goals in 18 appearances for the French national team.
Freedom defines his style
That sense of freedom continues to influence Olise’s approach to the game. Whether in the Bundesliga or on the biggest stage at the World Cup, he carries that same spirit of expressive football. He showcased this freedom by providing two assists in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal in their World Cup opener. Olise explained that he prefers operating centrally, where he can move freely and express himself without being restricted by strict tactical systems.
Reflecting further on his early footballing experiences, he said: "Football, in those conditions, is just freedom. It wasn’t learning in the strict sense either. I simply enjoyed playing football. I loved it, plain and simple. Well, I think everyone loves it when they’re young."
Looking ahead
Despite favouring a central playmaking role, Olise is likely to continue playing out wide for now. His focus remains firmly on helping France progress further in the World Cup. As Les Bleus prepare to take on Iraq and Norway in their upcoming group matches, Olise’s creativity and vision will be crucial as they aim to secure top spot in their group.
