Severe thunderstorms are forecast to hit Philadelphia this evening, raising concerns over potential disruptions to the France vs Iraq clash. FIFA officials have confirmed that emergency weather protocols are in place to ensure the safety of players and supporters.
Among the measures being prepared are the possible relocation of spectators from their seats to secure areas within the stadium concourses or designated emergency shelters. These steps form part of FIFA’s established guidelines for handling extreme weather events during major tournaments.
Star forward Kylian Mbappe, who netted twice in France’s opening match, will aim to continue his fine form if the weather permits play to go ahead as scheduled.
According to FIFA regulations, any lightning detected within an eight-mile radius of the venue will necessitate an immediate suspension of the match, with spectators evacuated from their seating areas. Play can only resume once there have been 30 consecutive minutes without lightning activity.
Should the storm persist, officials may decide to postpone the fixture until the following day to maintain safety standards and broadcast commitments.
Lauren Lambrugo, Chief Operating Officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, explained the procedure to The Mirror, stating: “They’ll begin to evacuate the stadium into the main concourse and direct everyone to emergency shelter. After that, it must be a 30-minute wait before anyone can return to the field. They will ensure that the match is completed and televised, even if it has to be played tomorrow.”
Iraqi striker Mohanad Ali will be looking to inspire his team to a surprise result against the European champions, should conditions allow the game to proceed.
While adverse weather was anticipated to affect several matches during this summer’s competition, no fixtures have yet been impacted. The only instance of delay so far occurred during a pre-tournament friendly between England and Costa Rica.
Last year’s Club World Cup, also hosted in the United States, faced multiple interruptions and temporary suspensions due to storm activity, providing valuable lessons for organisers ahead of this event.
