The Central Government has recently launched the 'Abhigyan' app. With the help of this app, police and investigative agencies can scan a suspect's fingerprints on the spot and check their criminal record in just 35 seconds. Launched by Home Minister Amit Shah, this app was developed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

What is the Abhigyan app? It is a mobile application linked to NAFIS (National Automated Fingerprint Identification System). It contains fingerprint records of over 13 million (1.3 crore) criminals and suspects from across the country.

Police officers can now stop a suspect on the street and capture their thumbprint using a portable fingerprint scanner. Once the scanner is connected to the app, the individual's complete criminal record—including past cases, arrests, and jail records—appears on the mobile screen within 35 seconds.

Key features of the app:
Real-time identification: Instant identification via fingerprints.
Mobile-based: No need to visit the police station.

Two-step authentication: Prevents unauthorized use.
Linked to NAFIS database: Records related to drugs, human trafficking, and other serious crimes are also available.
Strengthens field-level policing.

What are the benefits?

Reduces the likelihood of criminals escaping.
Makes the investigation process faster and more accurate.
Enhances the safety of police officers.
Strengthens the justice system.

Database of over 13 million fingerprints
According to the government, NAFIS currently holds approximately 12.9 million (1.29 crore) fingerprint records. Additionally, the system contains:

Data on nearly 991,000 narcotics offenders.
Information related to 365,000 human trafficking cases.
Detailed records related to prisons.

The government states that this data will help make crime investigation and policing more effective in the future. It should be noted that this app is not for the general public; it is available exclusively to officials from the police, CID, and other security agencies. The general public cannot download it.

The Abhignan app represents a major step towards making policing advanced and technologically robust. Now, criminals can be easily apprehended even on the streets. The government aims to implement this system effectively across the country to aid in crime control. This app is a crucial initiative towards Digital India and smart policing.
