Germany suffered a significant setback during their 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday, as defender Nico Schlotterbeck was forced to leave the pitch at half-time following an injury.
Reports from Sky Germany and Bild have confirmed that the Borussia Dortmund centre-back will miss the rest of the World Cup campaign.
The 26-year-old has sustained a ligament tear in his left ankle, an injury that is expected to sideline him for approximately two months.
Antonio Rüdiger replaced Schlotterbeck at the interval against Côte d’Ivoire and is now set to partner Jonathan Tah in central defence for Germany’s remaining World Cup fixtures.
Having already secured the top spot in Group E, Germany will face Ecuador in their final group-stage match on Thursday.
