Indian Railways News: Indian Railways will utilize AI, multi-sensor, and digital twin technologies to enhance track safety, enabling the timely detection of track defects and potential accidents.
Indian Railways AI Technology: Indian Railways is set to adopt a new technology to further strengthen track safety. This technology will help detect both major accidents and minor defects on railway tracks in a timely manner. The government states that the primary objective of this technology is to further improve passenger safety.
The technology will employ modern systems such as multi-sensors, AI, and digital twins. By utilizing data from sensors, the system will monitor the track's structural integrity and condition. According to the Railways, IIT Guwahati and IIT Bhubaneswar are jointly developing a high-tech system named "Autonomous Unitary System for Inspection and Monitoring of Permanent Way."
What is this new technology?
It will continuously monitor railway tracks.
Sensors will provide information regarding minor changes and defects on the tracks.
An AI system will alert the Railways based on this data.
Digital twin technology will also be used to create a digital replica of the railway track.
This will help in understanding the current condition of the track and predicting potential accidents.
According to a senior Railway Board official, this robotic model is currently under development by IIT Guwahati and IIT Bhubaneswar. Once ready, it will undergo trials on the North Eastern Railway; if successful, it will be implemented nationwide.
A highly useful technology
Notably, several railway routes in the North Eastern Railway zone pass through hilly terrain, forests, and areas prone to heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides. In such locations, the risk of damage to railway tracks is significantly higher. Especially in Assam and many parts of the Northeast, the soil beneath the tracks often weakens during floods. In such situations, an AI-based system will be able to detect even minor changes in the tracks, allowing for timely repairs.
