Agartala, June 22: Tripura has set an ambitious goal to enhance its solar power generation capacity by 11 MW during the financial year 2026-27. This initiative is part of the state's broader strategy to bolster renewable energy infrastructure and lessen reliance on traditional power sources.
The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) is leading this initiative, promoting the adoption of clean energy solutions in government facilities and remote areas. Currently, the state produces around 35 MW of solar energy.
According to Debabrata Sukladas, the Director General (in-charge) of TREDA, the agency is intensifying its efforts to meet this target, particularly by enhancing solar infrastructure in public institutions.
As part of this expansion, solar power systems are set to be installed in all 58 Block Development Offices and 275 village committee offices throughout the state. This initiative is anticipated to significantly boost the use of renewable energy in government operations while also lowering electricity expenses.
Sukladas mentioned that solar installations will be extended to additional government offices, with the tendering process for the project nearing completion and expected to commence soon.
He also noted that all district magistrate offices in Tripura have already been outfitted with solar power systems, showcasing the government's dedication to fostering sustainable energy practices.
Officials indicated that the state government is increasingly viewing solar energy as a practical and sustainable alternative to electricity produced from gas-based power plants. This transition is expected to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
Sukladas emphasized the significance of solar energy in Tripura's hilly and remote areas, where extending conventional power infrastructure is often challenging and economically impractical due to difficult terrain and dispersed populations.
"We are striving to provide a reliable electricity solution in remote areas where grid connectivity is challenging and cost-effective," he stated.
