Manchester United set £10 million valuation as Radek Vitek nears permanent exit

Manchester United appear ready to part ways with young goalkeeper Radek Vitek, as the club has reportedly set a £10 million price tag on the Czech Under-21 international following his impressive loan stint at Bristol City.

For years, United have faced criticism for their handling of academy graduates. The club has often retained young talents for longer than necessary, diminishing their market value due to limited playing time, or repeatedly sent them out on loan in the hope they would eventually break through.

A quick comparison with United’s Premier League rivals reveals a stark difference in approach. Other top clubs have shown greater decisiveness in selling homegrown players at the right time, often securing strong financial returns in the process. INEOS, United’s new ownership group, seems determined to rectify this trend, with last summer already showing signs of more pragmatic transfer dealings. This summer window appears to be following a similar path as they prioritise financial stability and profit generation.

Following a standout campaign with Bristol City, Vitek has attracted significant interest from multiple Championship clubs. Despite his potential, United’s goalkeeping department is undergoing major changes, with both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir expected to leave. Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens is set to remain as the first-choice option, while veteran Tom Heaton has agreed to a new deal, though he is not expected to serve as Lammens’ main deputy.

There had been speculation that Vitek could step into the backup role at Old Trafford. However, this would likely limit his opportunities to sporadic appearances in domestic cup competitions, as manager Michael Carrick is expected to favour Lammens for key fixtures. Given his age and ambition, the 22-year-old shot-stopper is keen for regular first-team football rather than spending another season on the bench.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, United are reluctantly prepared to sanction Vitek’s permanent departure rather than arrange another loan. The £10 million valuation reflects the club’s recognition of his talent and potential. It remains uncertain whether United will negotiate a sell-on or buyback clause in the deal, which could soften the blow of losing a promising academy product.

As part of their squad planning, INEOS are also considering a homegrown replacement to comply with UEFA regulations. Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, himself a graduate of United’s academy, has emerged as a possible target.

Vitek’s possible exit marks another step in United’s evolving transfer strategy under INEOS, focusing on efficiency, financial discipline, and smarter asset management — a shift that aims to align the club with the practices of their most successful rivals.
