LPG Users Alert: Families Switching to PNG Must Surrender Gas Connections Within 30 Days

Households using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) may need to pay close attention to a recently introduced government rule that could affect their gas connections. Under new regulations, families that have shifted to piped natural gas (PNG) services are now required to surrender their existing LPG connections within a specified time frame.

The move is part of the government's broader effort to streamline fuel distribution, prevent duplicate domestic gas connections, and ensure better availability of LPG cylinders in regions where PNG infrastructure has not yet reached.

New Rule for Households Moving to PNG

According to the updated guidelines, consumers who obtain a PNG connection must discontinue their LPG connection within 30 days of activation. The rule applies to customers of major public-sector LPG providers, including Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas.

For example, if a household receives a PNG connection on June 1, the LPG connection must be surrendered by July 1. Failure to complete the process within the prescribed period could result in restrictions on LPG refill bookings and, in some cases, closure of the LPG account.

The policy was introduced through the LPG Amendment Order, 2026, which was issued earlier this year. Officials say the objective is to reduce duplication in the domestic fuel system and improve the efficiency of subsidy distribution.

Why the Government Introduced the Change

Authorities believe that many households continue to retain LPG connections even after shifting to PNG, leading to unnecessary duplication of fuel resources. By encouraging consumers to use a single primary cooking fuel where PNG is available, the government hopes to optimize cylinder allocation across the country.

The initiative is also expected to improve LPG availability in rural and semi-urban areas that continue to rely heavily on cylinder-based cooking fuel. Officials say the move could help ensure that subsidies and fuel supplies reach households that genuinely depend on LPG.

In addition, reducing duplicate connections may help curb unauthorized use, misuse of subsidized cylinders, and fuel diversion practices that affect supply chains.

Relief for Students, Tenants, and Migrant Workers

Recognizing the mobility needs of many consumers, the government has included provisions for individuals who frequently relocate for employment, education, or temporary assignments.

Customers who surrender their LPG connections after switching to PNG will be issued a transfer voucher. This document can help them obtain a fresh LPG connection in another city or location where PNG services are unavailable.

The measure is expected to benefit tenants, students living away from home, migrant workers, and professionals who move between cities due to work commitments. Officials say the transfer system has been designed to make future LPG reconnections smoother and more convenient.

LPG Booking Rules Remain Unchanged

Existing cylinder refill booking intervals continue to apply under the current framework. Depending on customer category and location, LPG users can generally book refills after waiting periods of 25, 35, or 45 days.

Consumers are advised to continue following the booking rules applicable to their respective regions and service providers.

Oil Companies Monitoring Dual Connections

Reports indicate that oil marketing companies have intensified efforts to identify households that hold both LPG and PNG connections. Databases are being reviewed to detect duplicate usage and encourage eligible customers to migrate completely to PNG wherever the network is operational.

Officials believe that removing unnecessary dual connections can improve transparency in the distribution system and enhance fuel availability for households that rely exclusively on LPG cylinders.

OTP Verification Now Mandatory for Cylinder Delivery

Another important change affects the LPG delivery process itself. Under the revised system, customers must provide a valid One-Time Password (OTP) before receiving a cylinder delivery.

The OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with the LPG account. Delivery personnel will verify the code before handing over the cylinder, adding an extra layer of security and helping ensure that deliveries reach the correct consumer.

What LPG Consumers Should Do

Consumers who have recently switched to PNG should check the activation date of their connection and ensure they complete the LPG surrender process within the required 30-day period. Keeping contact details updated and ensuring access to the registered mobile number will also be important for hassle-free cylinder deliveries under the OTP-based verification system.

With these changes, the government aims to improve fuel distribution efficiency, strengthen subsidy management, and create a more transparent energy delivery network across the country.
