New Liverpool signing Victor Munoz has suffered an injury setback ahead of Spain’s second group stage match at the 2026 World Cup, while Lamine Yamal continues to recover from a hamstring issue, leaving coach Luis de la Fuente with key selection decisions to make.
Yamal, the Barcelona winger, has admitted he is not yet ready to complete a full 90 minutes as Spain prepare to take on Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, Georgia. The 16-year-old entered the tournament nursing a hamstring problem that kept him out for the end of the club season, but returned to action in Spain’s surprising 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their first group match.
He featured for the final 20 minutes on the right flank, but could not help the European champions find a breakthrough against the underdogs. Speaking ahead of the next fixture, Yamal provided an update on his condition.
“I'm fine, I'm feeling good, but it's too soon, it's unnecessary,” Yamal told TVE when asked about playing a full match. “I'm still settling in – it's not the right time to play a full match yet – but I can play for as many minutes as the manager wants.”
Given his comments, Ferran Torres is expected to continue on the right wing, while Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted the decisive goal for Spain in the Euro 2024 final against England, should lead the line.
Gavi started on the left in the opener but was replaced by Nico Williams, who may return to the starting XI if deemed fully fit. The midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri, and Fabian Ruiz is likely to remain unchanged.
In defence, Marcos Llorente – naturally a midfielder – operated at right-back and appears to be De la Fuente’s preferred option in that position. Marc Cucurella, now playing for Real Madrid, is expected to feature on the left, with Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte continuing their partnership at centre-back.
Spain have, however, been dealt a blow with Victor Munoz encountering a setback in his recovery from a calf injury that he carried into the tournament. The Spanish FA released a statement confirming the development: “During his scheduled and individualised recovery process, an additional muscle injury has occurred, which will delay his return to competition. His availability for upcoming matches will depend on his progress and rehabilitation in the coming days.”
