Tiruvallur: A major accident occurred due to ammonia gas leaking in a seafood export unit in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. Officials have confirmed that two people have died in this accident. The condition of seven people remains critical and they have been kept on ventilator.

Complaints of difficulty in breathing, dizziness and vomiting   

The gas leak first affected the employees living in the unit. Affected people reported symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness and vomiting. Initial investigation revealed that gas leaked from a measurement valve installed in the plant.

Most of the affected employees were North Indian migrants who were living in the same unit. As soon as he came in contact with the gas, his condition started deteriorating. A total of 46 people were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment.

Condition of seven is critical, some patients will be shifted to Chennai   

According to health department officials, the condition of seven employees is critical and they have been put on ventilator. The team of doctors is continuously monitoring. There are preparations to send more serious cases to Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai for better treatment.

The team of local administration and health department is present on the spot and is engaged in relief work. As a precautionary measure, surveillance has also been increased in the area around the unit.

CM formed a three-member committee to investigate  

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has taken the accident seriously and ordered an investigation. He has formed a three-member committee including Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Member Secretary of Pollution Control Board and Additional Director of Public Health.

The committee will have to submit the interim report within 24 hours and the final report within three days. The report will include points like the cause of the accident, shortcomings in safety standards and fixing responsibility.

At present, the administration’s focus is on treating the injured and providing relief to the affected families. Officials say that strict action will be taken against the culprits after the report comes.
