Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2027 are still far away but the discussion has intensified in political circles regarding the possible alliance of Samajwadi Party and Congress. On one hand, senior Congress leader and MP Imran Masood is continuously claiming that Congress is preparing to contest elections on all 403 assembly seats of the state. Congress’ UP in-charge Avinash Pandey has also given similar indications from many forums.
Interestingly, despite these statements, there has been no sharp reaction from the Samajwadi Party. Political experts believe that this silence of the Samajwadi Party is not a coincidence but could be part of a well-thought-out strategy. The party currently wants to avoid a public confrontation with the Congress and the final decision has been left to the top leadership level.
Akhilesh wants to repeat the success of Lok Sabha in the Assembly.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party and Congress alliance had given a big blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh. For this reason, the leadership of Samajwadi Party does not want to give the message that there is any sourness in the relations between the two parties. It is believed that Akhilesh Yadav wants to keep the option of alliance open before the assembly elections.
If sources are to be believed, the leadership of Samajwadi Party has indicated to its leaders to avoid reacting to the statements of Congress. The party believes that the final decision on seats and alliance will be taken closer to the elections. In such a situation, creating controversy by making statements now can be politically harmful.
Is this Congress’s strategy to create pressure?
A section of political analysts believe that Congress’s claim of contesting elections on 403 seats is actually a strategy to activate the organization and boost the morale of the workers. Congress wants to send the message that it is preparing for the elections not just in the role of an ally but as a strong political force.
Akhilesh’s focus on PDA, no haste on alliance
Samajwadi Party is currently busy in strengthening the PDA (Backward, Dalit and Minority) equation. The party’s entire focus is on organization expansion, social alliance and consolidating anti-BJP votes. This is the reason why instead of directly reacting to the statements of Congress, Samajwadi Party seems to be moving forward on its political agenda.
There is also discussion in the political circles that the Samajwadi Party wants to give free hand to the Congress and assess its real support base and organizational strength. At the same time, some experts believe that Akhilesh Yadav does not want to take the risk of angering any potential ally.
Together or apart in 2027?
At present, the biggest question is whether Samajwadi Party and Congress will contest elections together in 2027 or will they contest separately. No one has the answer to this yet. But one thing is clear that Imran Masood’s claim of 403 seats and Samajwadi Party’s continuous silence on it has definitely started a new debate in the politics of Uttar Pradesh. Now everyone’s eyes are on Akhilesh Yadav. The question is whether this silence is strategic or a sign of a big political decision to come.
