Actor Ranvir Shorey has expressed that his apprehension about being typecast has significantly shaped his career decisions, motivating him to pursue a variety of roles that challenge him. He has appeared in popular films such as "Ek Tha Tiger," "Singh Is Kinng," and "Lakshya," as well as in independent cinema like "Khosla Ka Ghosla," "Bheja Fry," "Mithya," "A Death in the Gunj," and "Sonchiriya." Additionally, his work in OTT series like "Metro Park," "Sunflower," and "Tabbar" has established him as a multifaceted actor.
"I’ve always aimed to avoid repeating roles because I grew up on the outskirts of the film industry. The concept of 'typecasting' has been a constant concern since I started acting, influencing many of my choices. Therefore, I strive to take on new and distinct roles each time," Shorey shared in a recent interview.
In his latest project, the series "Pyramid Scheme," which delves into themes of ambition, greed, and the perilous realm of quick wealth, Shorey continues to explore diverse narratives. His co-star, Paramvir Cheema, echoed similar sentiments about avoiding repetitive roles.
"The anxiety of being typecast is something I grapple with. I often received offers for Punjabi roles or minor parts. For example, in 'Border 2,' I had to persuade director Anurag Singh to allow me to portray a character that speaks Haryanvi instead of wearing a turban. I’m grateful he believed in my vision," Cheema, known for his roles in "Border 2," "Black Warrant," and "Chamak," explained.
"I previously acted in 'Sapne vs Everyone' on YouTube, where I played a boy from Delhi. When 'The Pyramid Scheme' was presented to me, I recognized it as a pivotal role and committed to giving it my all," he added.
Set against the culturally vibrant backdrop of Haridwar, "Pyramid Scheme" follows Goldy (Cheema), a charismatic young man striving for a better life, who inadvertently gets entangled in the alluring yet bizarre world of pyramid marketing. The series, available on Prime Video, is crafted by Shreynash Pandey and directed by Ashish R Shukla and Pandey, with the script penned by Akshendra Mishra. Initially envisioned as a feature film, it transitioned into a series format.
"Transforming it into a series was advantageous since we had 300 pages of content. Selling it as a film proved challenging. We received plenty of advice but no commitments; everyone had opinions on what should or shouldn’t be made," Shukla remarked. "It wasn't until Shreyansh joined the project, along with TVF's support—known for tackling unique subjects—that we found the backing we needed. They were among the few in the industry willing to invest in this concept," he added, noting that the team developed the script from scratch, incorporating numerous subplots.
Pandey, who has produced acclaimed shows like "Panchayat" and "Aspirants," stated they were eager to pursue the idea of "Pyramid Scheme."
"When a story resonates deeply within you, it feels essential to share it. That’s why we decided to move forward with it," he explained. Although the series centers on scams, it also highlights the human toll of such schemes, including damaged relationships, shattered dreams, and the shame felt by victims. "While it carries elements of satire and dark comedy, our goal was to present a humane perspective. We aimed for it to reflect real people's stories rather than reducing characters to mere stereotypes," Shukla noted.
Shorey emphasized that while the narrative revolves around a fraudulent scheme, it was the exploration of human nature that captivated him. "Often, individuals who have been deceived choose not to disclose their experiences. It becomes a personal shame they carry. As Shukla mentioned, every person, regardless of their dire circumstances, holds onto a flicker of hope. When that hope is extinguished, it represents a profound violation," he stated. The cast of "The Pyramid Scheme" also includes Shekhar Suman, Aanjjan Srivastav, Alfia Jafry, Ashish Raghava, Akhilendra Mishra, Smita Bansal, Vijay Kumar, Indresh Malik, Ravi Bhel, Sushant Singh, Sonal Jha, and Sadanand Patil.
The series is produced by The Viral Fever (TVF).
