Germany were dealt a worrying injury setback during their 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire at the World Cup on Saturday, as defender Nico Schlotterbeck was forced to withdraw at half-time.
Speaking after the match to ZDF, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann admitted that the early signs regarding Schlotterbeck’s condition were not encouraging.
“He has an issue with his medial ligament and will undergo an MRI scan tomorrow. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look too good,” Nagelsmann said.
According to the coach, Schlotterbeck initially felt discomfort early in the match but decided to continue playing until the break despite the pain.
“In the end, it was mostly a tactical decision on whether he could still contribute effectively. He performed very well until half-time,” Nagelsmann added, explaining why the centre-back remained on the pitch for the first 45 minutes.
The Borussia Dortmund defender had started both of Germany’s opening group matches in central defence alongside Jonathan Tah. Against Côte d’Ivoire, he was replaced by Antonio Rüdiger at the interval.
