Leeds United fans in Corralejo create an electrifying matchday experience on Fuerteventura

Leeds United supporters living on the island of Fuerteventura have built a vibrant matchday community in Corralejo, transforming a small local bar into a buzzing hub every time the team plays. The venue has become a favourite spot for holidaymakers seeking to watch pre-season friendlies that most other bars do not broadcast on LUTV.

As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Leeds United Supporters’ Club Fuerteventura branch gathers at The York on Calle Juan de Austria. The branch is led by John Holliday, a former Elland Road season ticket holder who relocated to the island 15 years ago. He established the group to unite Leeds fans who either live on or visit Fuerteventura.

Among the resort’s football communities, Leeds and Newcastle have the strongest presence. The local fan base includes around 12 regulars, joined by supporters from across the island and visiting tourists. Although The York only has about 25 seats, matchday crowds often exceed 40, reaching a record of 65 during the FA Cup tie against Harrogate Town last season.

One of the most memorable occasions was a Tottenham Hotspur matchday, which drew 64 fans, including a 15-member fantasy football group meeting face-to-face for the first time. Holliday fondly recalls the electric atmosphere when Leeds triumphed over Manchester United. On another occasion, five fans sitting together discovered they had all held North East Upper season tickets simultaneously back in England.

Fuerteventura operates on the same time zone as the UK, both being five hours ahead of the US east coast. This means Leeds’ upcoming American pre-season fixtures will result in late-night viewings for fans in Spain. Matches such as Wrexham in Tampa and Sunderland in New Jersey will kick off at 12.30am UK time, while the clash against Liverpool in Chicago is scheduled for 8pm on Saturday, August 2.

The York intends to screen all of Leeds’ pre-season games, though the late US timings could reduce turnout. Leeds are also expected to host RB Leipzig on August 8 or 9 before facing Manchester United in Dublin the following Wednesday. A Leeds United flag remains permanently displayed inside the bar, and supporters can stay updated either through Facebook or by dropping by the venue in person.
