Friday’s victory for the United States over Australia has shaken up the standings in Group D of the 2026 World Cup group stage.
Mauricio Pochettino’s co-hosting side now sit on six points from two games, while Australia have three. This means that the result of today’s encounter between Turkey and Paraguay at Levi’s Stadium could prove decisive for both teams’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
With so much at stake in Santa Clara, the responsibility of ensuring order and fairness on the pitch falls on a crucial figure — the match referee.
The second Group D fixture of the day will be officiated by Ivan Barton of El Salvador. Barton hails from a nation that experienced one of the most infamous defeats in World Cup history. El Salvador have qualified for the finals twice, losing all six of their matches and scoring only once — that solitary goal coming in a record 10-1 loss to Hungary in 1982, nine years before Barton was born.
Barton, aged 35, has been a FIFA-listed referee since 2018. He has extensive experience officiating matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico as part of the CONCACAF circuit. He was also one of five referees representing the confederation at his first World Cup four years ago.
Across those World Cup games, Barton issued a total of just three yellow cards — a notably lower disciplinary rate than his usual average in the Salvadoran league or other regional competitions.
Between the Apertura and Clausura seasons of 2025 and 2026, Barton officiated 24 matches, during which he showed 12 red cards and averaged nearly five yellow cards per game. He also awarded penalties in roughly every second match, including some in pairs during particularly heated Clausura fixtures earlier this year.
Barton was also the man in charge during the inter-continental play-off final between Iraq and Bolivia, showcasing his growing stature as a trusted official in high-pressure international matches.
For tonight’s match in California, Barton will have the support of assistant referees David Moran, also from El Salvador, and Henry Pupiro from Nicaragua. Jamaica’s Oshane Nation has been appointed as the fourth official for the contest.
