Hyderabad: A major controversy has erupted in Telangana after Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy urged the state government to investigate reports claiming that nearly 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth around Rs 1,600 crore have allegedly gone missing from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL).

In a letter addressed to Telangana Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy on June 10, the Union Minister referred to media reports highlighting the alleged disappearance of coal and called for an immediate and comprehensive inquiry into the matter.

What Did G Kishan Reddy Say?

Expressing concern over the reports, Kishan Reddy stated that the alleged disappearance of such a large quantity of coal could have caused a substantial financial loss to SCCL.

“I wish to bring to your notice reports regarding the disappearance of nearly 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth Rs 1,600 crore, resulting in significant financial loss to the company,” the minister said in his communication to the Chief Minister.

Financial Concerns Over SCCL

The Union Minister also pointed out that SCCL, which is jointly owned by the Telangana Government and the Central Government in a 51:49 ratio, is already facing financial stress. He noted that pending dues from the state government have added pressure on the company’s finances.

According to Reddy, if the allegations are found to be true, the reported loss could further weaken the financial position of the state-run mining giant.

Demand for Transparent Investigation

Kishan Reddy urged the Telangana government to conduct a transparent inquiry to establish the facts and ensure accountability. The issue has sparked political attention, with opposition leaders likely to seek answers regarding the management and monitoring of coal stocks at SCCL.
