Tottenham Hotspur appear to have thrown a wrench into Manchester United’s transfer strategy this summer.
Determined to steer clear of another relegation scare, Spurs are investing heavily in the transfer window to bolster Roberto De Zerbi’s squad with marquee signings.
Over the past few days, Tottenham have intensified their efforts to persuade Mateus Fernandes to make the switch to North London, even as Manchester United remain keen on the midfielder.
According to reports on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur are close to finalising personal terms with the Portuguese international.
Despite Tottenham’s advances, Fernandes is still understood to prefer a move to Old Trafford. Within Manchester United’s camp, there is quiet optimism that they continue to lead the race to reach an agreement with West Ham United.
Nevertheless, Spurs’ involvement complicates matters for United, as West Ham now have added leverage to stand firm on their £85 million valuation of the player.
Meanwhile, reports from Italy suggest that this latest twist could prompt Manchester United to revisit their stance on another Premier League midfielder.
Having previously made Fernandes their top target, United reportedly informed Newcastle United last week that they would not pursue a deal for Sandro Tonali.
However, journalist Orazio Accomando of SportMediaset claims that United have now sought details regarding Tonali’s availability.
The 26-year-old Italian, renowned for his tireless energy and physicality in midfield, is now said to be attracting interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Among these clubs, Spurs are believed to be the most aggressive suitors for the £100 million-rated Tonali.
However, both Manchester United and Arsenal have the advantage of offering Champions League football—an important factor for Tonali, who is reportedly eager to depart Newcastle United in search of top-tier European competition.
