Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their efforts to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as reported by journalist David Ornstein.

In recent weeks, Spurs have held encouraging discussions with representatives of the Italy international, and talks have now advanced to direct engagement with Newcastle United.

The North London club are keen to gain an advantage over their Premier League rivals Manchester City in the race for Tonali’s signature.

The 26-year-old has become one of the most in-demand midfielders in this transfer window, with both Tottenham and City discussing personal terms with his camp.

Newcastle, however, are not in a position where they must sell the former AC Milan player. His current contract extends until 2029, with an option for an additional year.

The Magpies have placed a valuation of around £100 million on Tonali and are only prepared to negotiate if that figure is met.

Tottenham believe several elements could make them an attractive destination for the midfielder. Manager Roberto De Zerbi, also Italian, is said to be a major influence behind the club’s pursuit of Tonali.

The opportunity to live in London, coupled with a potentially lucrative financial package, could further entice the player.

Securing Tonali would mark a major coup for Spurs as they continue their summer rebuild, aiming to reinforce key areas of their squad before the new season begins.

The club remain interested in West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, though Tonali remains their top priority at this stage of the window.

Manchester City are still competing strongly for the player, meaning Tottenham face significant competition for one of Europe’s most complete box-to-box midfielders.

Tonali had an excellent 2025/26 campaign, making 53 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle United.

With Newcastle open to offers that reach their valuation, this could develop into one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer window.
