An emotional Alex Freeman described his maiden World Cup goal as an "unforgettable moment" after the defender propelled the United States to a clinical 2-0 victory over Australia, sealing the top spot in Group D on Saturday.
The 21-year-old Villarreal wing-back thought his dream moment at Seattle Stadium had been cruelly snatched away when the assistant referee raised the offside flag in the second half. However, a swift VAR check overturned the decision, triggering absolute pandemonium in the stands and among the home dugout.
"It was a deeply emotional moment. Cristian Roldan and the lads on the bench told me to celebrate in that corner," a ecstatic Freeman said post-match. "This moment validates how hard I've worked to get here, belting out the national anthem in front of a fantastic crowd."
Freeman has rapidly emerged as a lethal weapon in Mauricio Pochettino's high-flying squad. Having already set up a goal in the USA’s opening 4-1 thrashing of Paraguay, his strike against the Socceroos capped off a sensational week.
The young prodigy also opened up about his sporting lineage, paying tribute to his father, Antonio Freeman, an NFL legend and Super Bowl XXXI champion with the Green Bay Packers.
"It feels like a full-circle moment for my family. Having a father who achieved so much and mentored me through it all is amazing. He always taught me to be ready for the big stage and to write my own script," Freeman added.
US head coach Pochettino was full of praise for the rising star, earmarking him for global greatness. "He has come on in leaps and bounds. He is a humble lad who is always keen to learn. He has the raw potential to become one of the best in the world in his position," the Argentine tactician remarked.
While the USMNT march into the Round of 32 as group winners, Freeman warned against complacency ahead of their final group dead-rubber against Türkiye in Los Angeles on June 27. "Spirits are high and something special is in the air. But we cannot rest on our laurels if we want to face the bigger challenges ahead," he signed off.
