Former Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Demba Ba has been named the new sporting director of Ligue 1 outfit Le Havre. The 41-year-old steps into the role vacated by Mathieu Bodmer, joining after an impressive stint in a similar post at Dunkerque. The French side believes Ba’s experience both on and off the field will strengthen their long-term ambitions in France’s top division.
Le Havre bring Ba back to his hometown
Le Havre have officially confirmed the appointment of ex-Chelsea, Newcastle United and West Ham forward Demba Ba as their sporting director. The 41-year-old will oversee all sporting operations at the Stade Oceane, succeeding Bodmer. This move marks a sentimental return for Ba, who grew up in Le Havre before making his mark as one of the most recognised African footballers of his generation.
The announcement was made on Friday following weeks of speculation. Since retiring from professional football in 2021, Ba has quickly transitioned into football management. His new role at Le Havre places him at the heart of a project aimed at consolidating the club’s Ligue 1 status and shaping its future direction.
Le Havre welcome Ba back home
In their official statement, the club warmly acknowledged Ba’s deep connection to the city, celebrating his return to the region where he spent his formative years.
"It’s something of a homecoming: Demba Ba spent his childhood and teenage years in Le Havre, and now he’s back to settle once again in the Ocean City!" read the club’s official release.
"With his experience and a spirit of building for the future, Demba Ba has now joined Le Havre AC. He will continue to help the club grow and establish itself firmly in Ligue 1! Welcome home, Demba!"
Successful spell at Dunkerque paved the way
Before joining Le Havre, Ba earned plaudits for his work as a sporting executive at Dunkerque in Ligue 2. His leadership in recruitment and squad development was widely recognised and helped build his reputation in football administration.
Ba’s playing career took him across England and Turkey, giving him insight into different football cultures and systems. Le Havre hopes his international experience will be valuable in attracting new talent and driving the club’s Ligue 1 ambitions forward.
Key transfer window on the horizon
One of Ba’s immediate tasks will be preparing for the upcoming transfer window. His first priority will be to ensure that Le Havre’s squad has both the depth and quality to compete strongly in France’s top tier. Taking over from Bodmer certainly comes with expectations, but the club is confident that Ba’s vision and determination will build effectively upon the existing foundation.
