Zlatan Ibrahimovic has voiced his support for the United States Men’s National Team after their 2-0 triumph over Australia, which marked their first consecutive World Cup victories since 1930. The ex-LA Galaxy forward believes Mauricio Pochettino’s team possess the momentum, confidence, and home backing essential to contend for football’s most prestigious title.

USMNT extend their strong World Cup form

The United States confirmed their place in the knockout stage with a 2-0 win against Australia in Seattle. An early own goal by Cameron Burgess and a powerful header from Alex Freeman sealed the result, giving the hosts a second straight victory in the tournament.

This achievement represented a major landmark for the USMNT, as it was the first time since 1930 that they had won consecutive World Cup matches. Their excellent start has fuelled growing belief around Pochettino’s squad as they enter the next phase of the competition. Among those impressed was Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who backed the hosts to maintain their fine run and even push for the title.

Ibrahimovic urges fans to believe in the team

Speaking on Fox Sports after the game, Ibrahimovic lauded the team’s display and encouraged American supporters to have faith in their side. The Swedish legend also stressed how vital momentum can be during a major tournament.

“If you didn’t believe before, I will repeat: start believing,” said Ibrahimovic. “They have the country behind them, and when you have that kind of support, you are very difficult to beat. They put in a strong performance today. To be honest, Australia were not a threat.”

He continued, “I said earlier that whatever happened before the World Cup doesn’t matter. What’s important is what happens now. The momentum they have — that’s what they need. They must keep building confidence from one match to the next. In the third game, let’s see what happens. They can rest some players now that they’ve qualified. Things are looking promising.”

When asked by presenter Rebecca Lowe for a one-word response on whether the United States could go on to win the World Cup, Ibrahimovic simply said: “Yes.”

Pochettino praises his team and supporters

Following the victory, Mauricio Pochettino echoed Ibrahimovic’s sentiments, commending both his players and the electric atmosphere in Seattle. The USMNT coach also drew comparisons between the passionate American support and that of his own country.

“I think it was another fantastic game — a very good first half. We dominated against a strong team,” said the Argentine manager. “I was saying yesterday that Argentina have incredible fans, but I think we are matching them. Our fans — I am so happy for them.”

Attention shifts to topping the group

Although qualification for the knockout rounds is already confirmed, the USMNT still have a clear target in their final group fixture against Turkey in Los Angeles.

Securing another win would guarantee first place in their group and potentially provide a smoother path through the knockout stages. With confidence soaring, home fans rallying behind them, and momentum gathering, Pochettino’s men will aim to sustain their impressive form as they move deeper into the tournament.
