What Must Scotland Do to Advance from Group C at the 2026 World Cup?

Morocco are one of the key teams standing between Scotland and a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Reaching the round of 32 would mark the first time in their history that the Tartan Army have advanced beyond the group stage in a World Cup, and this time, it looks like a realistic possibility.

Scotland began their campaign against Morocco at 11pm UK time, with the North Africans drawing first blood. But what exactly do the Scots need from this match to ensure their passage from Group C?

Scotland’s start to the tournament has placed them in a strong position to make history, despite the early setback against the Atlas Lions. They opened with a narrow 1-0 win over Haiti, courtesy of Aston Villa star John McGinn, securing three important points.

With a potential nine points on offer in the group stage, and after Morocco and Brazil played out a draw in their opening fixture, a victory in Foxborough would guarantee Steve Clarke’s side a spot in the round of 32.

However, given the group standings and the format that allows some third-placed teams with high point totals to qualify, even a draw could very well be enough for Scotland to progress, regardless of their result in the final match against Brazil.

Still, Clarke and his men will want to maintain momentum and aim as high as possible. A win in their second match could even see Scotland top Group C, setting up a round of 32 clash against the runners-up from Group F — currently shaping up to be one of Japan, the Netherlands, or Tunisia, with Sweden leading that group after their opening victory.

If Scotland finish second, they would instead meet the winners of Group F — potentially Graham Potter’s side, based on early results.

Head coach Steve Clarke will be fully aware of what is required for his team to reach this historic milestone. A defeat would not immediately eliminate them, but if Brazil defeat Haiti as expected and Morocco secure a win, Scotland’s hopes would depend on how other third-placed teams perform across the tournament.

Brazil, known as the Selecao, did not produce their best performance in their opener against Morocco, but with their attacking depth and defensive strength, Scotland will not want to rely on other results heading into their final group match if they can avoid it.

That decisive final game for Scotland is scheduled to kick off at 11pm UK time in Miami.
