Manoj Bajpayee is currently earning praises for his performance in his latest release 'Governor', a film inspired by one of the most challenging periods in India's economic history.


Describing the film to Hindustan Times, Manoj stated, “It’s a run against time for the protagonist to save the country from the crisis.” He also highlighted the unique nature of the subject matter. “To make a thrilling and engaging film on an RBI Governor and his journey to save the country from being declared bankrupt is a huge thing,” he said.
The challenge of playing S. Venkitaramanan

For 'Governor', Manoj transformed himself into a senior Tamil bureaucrat. The role required careful attention to mannerisms, appearance and speech patterns. The actor revealed that creating the right accent was one of the important aspects of his preparation. He wanted it to feel authentic while remaining accessible to audiences.

“First of all, I had to remind myself of the way this is for the Hindi audience. So, the accent cannot dominate the matter that I am talking. And still, people should have an idea that he doesn't belong to the Hindi region. He is coming from Tamil Nadu. The Tamil guy will speak Hindi in a certain way, the Telugu guy in a certain way, and the Malayali guy in a certain way. We are actors; we keep observing all of that when we interact with our friends from all these regions, or when we work very closely with those people. As an actor, it’s your job that not only you are accurate without overdoing it.”

'Satya' memory involving Bal Thackeray

During the conversation with the same portal, Manoj also revisited memories from 'Satya', the film that transformed his career and made Bhiku Mhatre one of the most iconic characters in Hindi cinema. The actor revealed that his portrayal was so convincing that many people believed he was actually Marathi. Among them was the late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Recalling the memorable meeting, Manoj said, “He invited me to his place. He gave me so much respect, but he was completely baffled when he came to know that I am not from Maharashtra. And then he asked me to learn Marathi. He was so disappointed, but I had a great meeting with him. He gave me lots of blessings for the future.”

The actor also shared his perspective on the relationship between artists and audiences. According to him, filmmakers should never underestimate viewers.

“Chaahe koi kisi art ke field mein ho usko apni audience, apne spectator, apne admirer ko toh kabhi bhi dumb nahi samajhna chahiye. Har aadmi aapki art ko apne experience, apni education aur apni upbringing ke hisaab se dekhta hai. Har kisi ke paas kuch na kuch hota hai aapke us art se leke jaane ke liye.” ("No matter which field of art a person belongs to, they should never consider their audience, viewers, or admirers to be dumb. Every individual interprets your art through the lens of their own experiences, education, and upbringing. Everyone takes away something meaningful from your art.")

Manoj also acknowledged the pressures associated with commercial filmmaking. He explained that filmmakers often try to appeal to the widest possible audience. “The first target of commercial films is that we entertain as many people as possible,” he said. At the same time, he believes the industry is evolving in a positive direction.

“Now I think commercial film directors and producers have also improved quite a bit in this matter. They have also educated themselves, and the demography has changed.”

Meanwhile, 'Governor' has been receiving encouraging reviews. ETimes praised Manoj's performance, stating, "Manoj Bajpayee is the reason many of these scenes continue to hold attention. He plays Ramanan as a thoughtful and composed man who carries pressure quietly. He is a man of few words and believes in action. Bajpayee relies on restraint, and that choice suits the character. While a few aspects of Bajpayee’s South Indian accent feel uneven, the sincerity of the performance never comes into question. Noushad Mohamed Kunju is particularly effective and brings credibility to every scene he appears in. Adah Sharma, as a journalist, performs her role with conviction, though the character could have been developed further. Madhoo, in the role of Ramanan’s wife, is inconsequential."

Directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, 'Governor' features Manoj as former Reserve Bank of India Governor S. Venkitaramanan. The story focuses on the critical decisions and efforts that helped India navigate a severe financial crisis.
