Emergency responders quickly arrived at the site of a tragic incident involving two passenger trains that collided just north of London on Friday evening. This unfortunate event resulted in at least one fatality and left more than 80 individuals injured. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes filled with panic as the collision threw passengers from their seats, causing numerous injuries, including broken bones and severe lacerations.
Dr. Pete Knapp, a passenger on one of the trains, shared his experience with the Press Association, stating, "I was thrown into the seat in front of me, and then smoke filled the air. There were cries and screams; people were terrified and disoriented." The collision occurred around 5:15 PM local time, as both trains were en route to London St Pancras station, according to rail tracking information.
Survivor's Account: 'Thought it was a Terrorist Attack'
Reflecting on the moment of impact, Knapp mentioned that there was no prior indication of danger. "I was thrown forward, and then I saw smoke. People were panicking, and it was chaotic," he recalled. He added, "My immediate thought was to escape the train, fearing it might be a terrorist attack; I believed it was safer to get out." Another passenger, Shola Mene, described the incident to the BBC, saying there was a loud bang followed by passengers being thrown from their seats. "Someone flew across and hit my husband in the face, and there was a lot of blood. Many had facial injuries," she reported.
In a separate interview, Knapp likened the aftermath to a bomb explosion, stating, "When I stood up, I saw chairs scattered everywhere, and it felt like I had experienced a bomb blast. I witnessed bloodied faces and broken limbs, with smoke enveloping the area." Footage shared on social media depicted injured passengers trapped in damaged carriages, while others, bandaged and shaken, were seen sitting beside the railway tracks after being evacuated. The RMT union, representing numerous railway employees, expressed its concern regarding the serious injuries reported among both passengers and train staff, stating they are closely monitoring the situation.
