Manchester United are keeping a close eye on several midfield targets as they prepare for a significant reshaping of their squad this summer.
The club’s strategy is reportedly to strengthen the midfield with players who already have Premier League experience. As a result, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes emerged as early summer priorities for the Red Devils.
However, United’s scouting team has also been active during the ongoing World Cup, monitoring additional options. The club has already decided not to pursue a move for Anderson, turning their attention to other potential recruits.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Manchester United had made contact with representatives of Felix Nmecha after the midfielder’s impressive showing in the Bundesliga.
According to Football Insider, United scouts are now following the Germany international closely in America, where he has drawn attention with his World Cup performances.
The 6’3” midfielder made a strong impression in Germany’s opening World Cup match against Curacao. His dynamic display included scoring the first goal in an emphatic 7-1 victory, showcasing his ability to time his runs from midfield effectively. Nmecha could have completed a hat-trick in the first half alone as the Curacao defence struggled to contain him.
His ball control and relentless work rate without possession further demonstrated why he has become such a vital part of Julian Nagelsmann’s setup for Germany.
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that United’s scouts have been “keeping a close eye” on Nmecha and were highly impressed by his World Cup debut performance. “The United scouting team have been keeping tabs on him and he started the World Cup with a strong performance for Germany which will have impressed his suitors,” O’Rourke said.
Despite United’s interest, prising the 25-year-old away from Borussia Dortmund is expected to be extremely challenging. Recent reports from BILD indicated that the German club have no plans to sell their star midfielder this summer and have placed a steep valuation on him to deter potential buyers, including United, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
The three Premier League clubs have reportedly been informed that they would need to pay around €120 million (£104 million) to secure Nmecha’s signature during this transfer window.
Dortmund recently extended the combative midfielder’s contract until 2030, which includes a release clause set at €80 million, effective from 2027.
