Michael Owen, who rose to prominence at Liverpool while still a teenager, has shared his thoughts on why Rio Ngumoha should continue his journey at Anfield rather than follow in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham or Jadon Sancho. The 17-year-old winger has attracted attention from Bayern Munich, sparking speculation about a potential move to the Bundesliga champions.

Ngumoha’s rise and potential Salah successor

After joining Liverpool from Chelsea in 2024, Ngumoha enjoyed a breakout season, making 29 appearances across all competitions. His performances have raised expectations, particularly as the club looks ahead to the 2026-27 campaign, where he may be asked to help fill the gap left by Mohamed Salah’s departure. Having already opened his senior goal account impressively, the youngster is being tipped for an increased role in the squad.

However, Liverpool’s plans to strengthen their attacking options could limit his playing time. Reports suggest Ngumoha is evaluating where his development would be best supported as the club continues to pursue high-profile wingers.

Bayern Munich interest despite attacking depth

Bayern Munich, the reigning Bundesliga champions, have reportedly shown interest in the young Englishman, even though their squad already includes former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz and French playmaker Michael Olise. While it seems improbable that Liverpool would entertain an offer, the growing trend of English talents moving to Germany—such as Bellingham and Sancho—adds intrigue to the situation.

Should Ngumoha stay at Liverpool?

Bellingham and Sancho both flourished at Borussia Dortmund, using their time in Germany to elevate their profiles and careers. Owen explained to GOAL: “When you look at other players who have gone abroad, many of them weren’t getting regular football or were at smaller clubs. Jude Bellingham moved from Birmingham, which was a step up, and Sancho wasn’t getting much game time at Manchester City.”

He added, “Rio is already at a top club and getting opportunities. He’s making good progress, so I don’t see any reason for him to think about leaving. Last season, he probably played more than he expected—mainly because Cody Gakpo struggled for form—and Rio performed quite well when called upon.”

Owen continued, “He’s still very young and has plenty to learn. He might get more chances this season depending on his own form and Gakpo’s. But he’s not yet at the stage where he’s a guaranteed starter for Liverpool or Bayern Munich. He’s still developing, and that’s perfectly fine.”

Contract situation: Liverpool preparing new deal

Ngumoha signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in September 2025, a three-year deal that ties him to the club until 2028. Reports indicate that the Reds are already preparing an improved contract offer for August this year, coinciding with the winger’s 18th birthday, which would allow him to commit to a longer-term agreement.

Under new manager Andoni Iraola, Liverpool will begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign a week before Ngumoha turns 18. Their season opener is scheduled for August 23 at St James’ Park, where they will face Newcastle United in what promises to be an exciting contest.
