As the Indian cricket team gears up for the third and final ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has emphasized the potential of Nitish Kumar Reddy as the 'natural successor' to seasoned all-rounder Hardik Pandya. With India already leading the series 2-0, the focus is on solidifying their all-rounder lineup.

In recent years, Team India has seen a surge of promising all-rounders, including Washington Sundar, Manav Suthar, Harsh Dubey, and Tanush Kotian, who have all showcased their skills as spin all-rounders. On the pace bowling front, Nitish Kumar Reddy stands out as a key candidate to fill Pandya's shoes in the near future.

Discussing the depth of all-rounders in the team, Doeschate remarked that most of the players are primarily bowling all-rounders. He noted, "When Hardik is in the lineup, he adds a unique dimension due to his strength as a batter and finisher. Finding a player who can both finish and bowl is quite rare."

He praised Nitish's development over the past 18 months, stating, "He has demonstrated his significance to the team, especially in this format. His physical condition is improving, and I believe he is the ideal backup for Hardik."

Doeschate expressed satisfaction with the all-rounders' progress and their contributions, highlighting the necessity of reliable lower-order batters for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2027 in South Africa. He mentioned players like Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey, noting their capabilities as bowling all-rounders.

He added, "Having players who can bat at number nine will be crucial in the next 14 to 15 months, especially in South Africa where we aim to field three dedicated seamers. The signs are promising for both the all-rounder and fast-bowling departments, and it has been refreshing to see talents like Prince, Gurnoor, and Aquib Nabi this week."
