The annual awards, organized by American magazine Travel + Leisure, recognize destinations, hotels and travel experiences across the Asia-Pacific region based on factors including visitor experience, hospitality standards, service quality and tourism offerings.

This year, Phu Quoc ranked behind only Koh Samui in Thailand and ahead of several well-known island destinations, including Bali in Indonesia, Palawan in the Philippines, Langkawi in Malaysia and Sumba in Indonesia.

The ranking adds to a series of recognitions for Vietnam’s largest island. In 2025, Condé Nast Traveler named Phu Quoc Asia’s most beautiful island and the world’s third most beautiful island. Earlier this year, readers of DestinAsian voted it the second-best island in Asia, up from fifth place previously.

In a recent feature, DestinAsian described Phu Quoc as entering “a new era of tropical tourism.”

In addition to beaches, the island has expanded its tourism offerings through investments in hospitality, entertainment and visitor infrastructure.

Among its attractions are the cable car linking the main island with Hon Thom, Sunset Town, the Kiss Bridge, and nightly multimedia shows including “Kiss of the Sea” and “Symphony of the Sea”.

The island has also seen growth in internationally branded accommodation, including JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, Premier Village Phu Quoc, La Festa Phu Quoc, Curio Collection by Hilton, and New World Phu Quoc Resort.

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay was also included in the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards 2026 list of Vietnam’s best beach and island hotels.

According to the An Giang Department of Tourism, the province welcomed more than 13.3 million visitors in the first five months of 2026, up 12.1% year-on-year.

Phu Quoc accounted for about 4.77 million arrivals during the period, an increase of 34.2%, while international arrivals reached approximately 1.17 million, up 51% from the same period last year.

Tourism revenue on the island totaled VND26.96 trillion (US$1.03 billion), accounting for more than 80% of the province’s total tourism revenue.

After the launch last November, the presence of Sun PhuQuoc Airways on the aviation map is also helping strengthen connectivity between Pearl Island and travelers worldwide.

Industry observers attribute the island’s growth to factors including Vietnam’s 30-day visa exemption policy for international visitors, expanded international air connectivity and continued investment in tourism infrastructure.

Air access to the island has continued to expand with the launch of additional international routes connecting Phu Quoc with destinations across Asia.

Preparations for APEC 2027 are also expected to support further infrastructure development. Major projects currently underway include the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport and construction of facilities to the summit.

These developments are expected to strengthen the island’s position as a tourism and events destination while supporting continued growth in visitor arrivals.
