In the politics of West Bengal, the turmoil in the political circles has intensified with the resignation of veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jyotipriya Mallik. Former minister Jyotipriya Mallik on Friday resigned from all posts of Trinamool Congress citing ill health. Mallik, a long-time close aide of Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, said that he had already informed the party leadership about his important decision. He clearly said, “I have resigned from all posts of Trinamool due to my ill health.”
This matter has come to light at a time when Trinamool Congress had recently made a major reshuffle in its organization. His resignation comes just days after the party had included Mallik in its reconstituted working committee. Jyotipriya Mallik played an important role as the Food and Supplies Minister of the state from 2011 to 2021. His political career faced a major setback when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him in October 2023 in connection with the alleged ration distribution scam.
Since his arrest, Mallik had continuously cited health problems. While in custody, he was subjected to detailed medical examination several times, in which various diseases were detected. His resignation announcement comes amid ongoing differences and organizational challenges within the Trinamool Congress. Recently Jyotipriya was included in the working committee of Trinamool Congress, but she has mentioned in the letter that due to physical illness she is not able to discharge these responsibilities.
Jyotipriya Mallik mentioned health problems in his resignation.
According to sources, Jyotipriya Mallik has given detailed information in his resignation letter. He has written that his blood sugar level has reached 350, which is a serious condition. Along with this, he is also suffering from a complex kidney problem. Due to these serious health challenges it is no longer possible for him to perform his duties for the party. However, there has been renewed speculation in the political circles regarding this resignation of Jyotipriya Mallik. This development is pointing towards new equations in the politics of West Bengal.
Jyotipriya Mallik, one of Mamata Banerjee’s close associates
Jyotipriya Mallik’s name has always been at the forefront among Mamata Banerjee’s close associates. Right from the beginning of Trinamool Congress, when Mamata Banerjee was in her political struggle days, Mallik stood shoulder to shoulder with her as a loyal soldier of the party. His resignation is not only a big loss for the party, but it also raises questions on the internal structure and future strategy of Trinamool Congress. With his departure, the lack of an experienced and dedicated leader will be felt in the party.
