STD increasing rapidly in tribal areas of Himachal, 38% people never used condom

Shimla. In the tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh, about 20 percent of the population i.e. every 5th person is affected by the symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Disease. The main reason for this is the huge decrease in condom use and lack of awareness. This shocking revelation was made in a survey conducted in Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts. This study was conducted by the Tribal Development Department of Himachal Pradesh and the Community Medicine Department of IGMC Shimla. The study was jointly conducted on 3,000 people aged 15 to 49 years.

Major and shocking figures of the report

20 percent of people in tribal areas have at least one STD- symptom. Chamba district here tops with 24.2 percent infection rate. After this, 20.1 percent STD cases have been found in Kinnaur and 15.7 percent in Lahaul-Spiti. The study found that only 24.9 percent of people had used a condom during their last sexual encounter, while more than 33 percent had never used a condom in their life. The screening rate for serious diseases like HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and hepatitis has been found to be very low. Only 2 percent of the participants have ever got it tested.

Although 72 percent of the people there have heard about STDs, but only 46.6 percent of them know that its infection can be prevented by using condoms. The main reasons for the increase in this infection are ignoring safe sexual practices and being seriously careless about the use of condoms. According to the report, women hesitate to openly discuss or seek treatment for problems to sexual and reproductive health. Little access to health services and awareness campaigns in tribal and remote areas. Additional Chief Secretary, Tribal Development, Omkar Chand Sharma has said that work will be started on further strengthening the health services for timely diagnosis, treatment and increasing awareness in remote areas.
