Referee Announced for Czechia vs South Africa World Cup 2026 Clash

After defeats in their opening Group A fixtures, both Czechia and South Africa are desperate to reignite their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns as they face off in their second group-stage encounter.

The match will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where victory for either side could restore their hopes of advancing, while defeat would leave their qualification chances hanging by a thread, even if they win their final group game.

Following the opening day’s drama in Mexico City, South Africa must ensure discipline this time, having been reduced to nine players in their first outing. They will need to keep all eleven on the pitch to stand a realistic chance against Czechia.

In a historic moment, the FIFA-appointed referee for this crucial fixture will be Tori Penso, a 39-year-old official from Florida, who is set to make her debut in a men’s World Cup match on home soil.

Penso officiated the final of the previous Women’s World Cup in Sydney, where Spain defeated England. Having been listed by FIFA in 2021, she has quickly risen through the ranks and earned selection for the 2026 tournament as one of the leading referees from the United States.

She holds the distinction of being the first female American referee to officiate at a men’s World Cup. Penso also made history as Major League Soccer’s first full-time female referee, a role she has held for the past six years.

Before the World Cup break, the 2026 MLS season had reached its halfway stage. In nine matches this season, Penso has yet to produce a red card, has awarded one penalty, and has averaged just over four yellow cards per game, reflecting her balanced officiating style.

The Czechia vs South Africa fixture marks her men’s World Cup debut, and South Africa—nicknamed Bafana Bafana—will be hoping for a smoother experience after their two red cards against Mexico in their opener.

Interestingly, Penso has never previously officiated either the Czech or South African national teams, in either men’s or women’s football.

She will head an all-female, all-American officiating team, joined by assistant referees Kathryn Nesbitt and Brooke Mayo. The fourth official will be New Zealand’s Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh, completing an international crew for the match in Atlanta.
