Tezzbuzz Desk- Telegram ban and the controversy to it has now taken legal and political form. The matter has reached the High Court after Telegram was temporarily banned in India to stop paper leaks before the NEET exam. During this, the Central Government made serious allegations in the court and said that this app is also being used for terrorist activities.

During the hearing, the Solicitor General, appearing for the central government, told the court that Telegram has become “an easy and convenient platform for terrorist activities”. The government says that some features of the app make it more vulnerable to wrongful activities.

What was the hearing in the High Court?

During the hearing in the court, the bench raised the question – “Can the rights of others be blocked to protect the rights of one person?”

On this, the government said that Telegram was given full opportunity to present its side and all the investigation findings are recorded on record. The matter was investigated by a committee, headed by the Cabinet Secretary.

Government’s argument: Backdating feature is a big threat

The Solicitor General also told the court that Telegram’s “backdating feature” is a serious risk as the date and time of messages can be changed through it. The government argues that this feature can be used for misinformation and tampering of evidence.

Why did Telegram come under investigation?

According to the government’s arguments, Telegram has some features that make it difficult to track users – chatting without showing the phone number, encrypted and private communication, difficulty in location tracking. Due to these reasons, the platform has been surrounded by allegations of being used for scams and illegal activities.

Strictness increased after NEET paper leak

In view of the fear of paper leak in the NEET exam, the government had imposed a temporary ban on Telegram. After this, instructions were also given to ban the use of the app. However, this ban has become a matter of controversy after being challenged in the court.

Telegram’s side: Ban will not stop leaks

The CEO of Telegram has opposed this action and said that banning any one app will not end problems like paper leaks. According to him, people doing such work can use any other platform.

The matter is still pending in the court

At present this matter is under consideration in the High Court and the next hearing is considered very important. The court’s decision will decide what will be the future of the restrictions imposed on Telegram in India.

The ongoing controversy regarding Telegram ban has now become a big debate on security, privacy and digital rights. On one hand, the government is linking it to security, while on the other hand, the app is calling it technically and practically wrong.
