Real Madrid have officially finalised the signing of Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in a deal valued at £52 million, marking the first major addition of Jose Mourinho’s second spell in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish international returns home after spending five years in the Premier League, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho wastes no time in making his presence felt
The returning Portuguese tactician has quickly begun reshaping his Real Madrid squad, identifying the 27-year-old left-back as a key target upon his arrival. The transfer underlines the club’s strong intent to rebuild after two seasons without a major trophy, giving Mourinho an experienced international to anchor his revamped defence.
According to reports from Guardian, the deal is worth an initial €60m (£52m/$70m), representing a significant outlay for a player who initially faced challenges winning over Chelsea supporters before becoming a key contributor to their European and global triumphs.
Cucurella commits to a long-term contract
Real Madrid have acted swiftly to secure Cucurella’s services for the foreseeable future. The club confirmed that the Spanish international has signed a six-year contract, which runs until June 30, 2032. In an official statement, Real Madrid said: "Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Marc Cucurella, who will be linked to our club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032."
The 2024 European Championship winner is currently representing Spain at the World Cup and is expected to join his new teammates at Real Madrid immediately after the tournament concludes. His exit from Chelsea signifies the end of a notable chapter for the Blues’ defensive line as they prepare for a fresh start under new management.
Chelsea bid farewell to a world champion
Chelsea confirmed Cucurella’s departure with a note of appreciation. In their official statement, the club said: "Marc Cucurella has completed a permanent transfer to Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid. Cucurella joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion and was part of the side that lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year."
The club also acknowledged his contributions on the international stage: "During Cucurella’s time at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old defender consistently featured for the Spanish national team and won the UEFA European Championships in 2024. Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the key role he played in our recent successes. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours."
Despite his achievements, reports suggest that relations between Cucurella and the club hierarchy deteriorated earlier this year. The defender had publicly voiced his discontent with the club’s direction, stating that the squad was suffering from "inexperience" following their Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain. He also expressed disappointment over the sacking of Enzo Maresca, while admitting that a potential return to his boyhood club, Barcelona, would be "hard to turn down."
Mourinho begins his Bernabeu rebuild
Cucurella’s transfer marks the opening move in what is expected to be an extensive summer overhaul as Mourinho looks to reconstruct the Real Madrid squad. The club is already being linked with several high-profile targets, including Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, and Bernardo Silva, as they seek to re-establish their dominance in Spain and across Europe.
For Chelsea, the transfer represents a significant financial boost as new manager Xabi Alonso plans his own squad reshuffle. Although Cucurella’s form reportedly dipped after the festive period, his move to the Spanish capital highlights the continued demand for his talents at the highest level of European football.
