Do you also get confused by terms like 'SPF 30', 'SPF 50', or 'PA+++' when buying sunscreen—whether in stores or online? If so, you aren't alone. Most of us buy sunscreen without truly understanding what these labels mean.

In reality, these terms indicate the level of protection offered against different harmful sun rays. Let’s break down the differences in simple terms and figure out which sunscreen is best for your skin.

What is SPF and how does it work?
SPF stands for 'Sun Protection Factor'. Its primary function is to protect our skin from the sun's UVB rays.

These are the rays responsible for sunburn and skin redness. They also cause significant, long-term damage to the skin. The higher the SPF number on the sunscreen, the greater the protection against UVB rays. For instance, SPF 50 offers better sun protection than SPF 30.

What does the PA rating mean?
In addition to SPF, sunscreens also feature a PA rating. This rating indicates protection against the sun's UVA rays. These rays are particularly dangerous because they penetrate deep into the skin's layers. UVA rays are responsible for issues like tanning, pigmentation, wrinkles, and premature aging.

This rating is measured using plus (+) signs:

PA+: Low protection
PA++: Moderate protection
PA+++: High protection
PA++++: Very high protection

How do you choose the perfect sunscreen for your skin?
According to Dr. Arzoo Pahwa, a Consultant Dermatologist at Kailash Deepak Hospital, looking only at the SPF isn't enough when buying sunscreen. You should always opt for a 'broad-spectrum' sunscreen that offers both types of protection.

For general use: Choose a sunscreen that offers at least SPF 30 protection along with a PA+++ rating. For those frequently exposed to the sun: If your work requires you to spend long hours outdoors, or if your skin is prone to rapid tanning and pigmentation, a sunscreen with SPF 50 and PA++++ is your best choice.

Simply put, SPF protects your skin from sunburn, while the PA rating guards against tanning and premature aging. Striking the right balance between the two is key to effective skin protection. Make sure to check for both these labels the next time you buy sunscreen.
