Liverpool snatch Newcastle target again to secure first signing of Andoni Iraola’s reign: report

Liverpool appear to have developed a knack for outmanoeuvring Newcastle United in the transfer market.

Having already hijacked the signing of Hugo Ekitike last year, the Reds have once again swooped in to capture one of Newcastle’s prime summer targets.

This time, the Merseyside club have landed what is expected to be a key acquisition for their newly appointed manager, Andoni Iraola.

The Basque tactician will take charge at Anfield following the departure of Arne Slot, whose tenure ended in disappointment after a largely unsuccessful 2025/26 campaign.

Liverpool have reportedly activated the £34 million release clause of a player who had been a top target for Newcastle during the current transfer window.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old has already completed his medical ahead of a move from Osasuna to Merseyside.

The young Spaniard averaged more than two dribbles per game with a success rate exceeding 40% in La Liga last season, while also winning nearly nine duels per match.

His consistency in those metrics highlights his fearless approach to pressing and engaging physically with opponents.

While creativity may be considered Victor Munoz’s biggest area for improvement, his overall profile shows significant potential. Few young forwards can boast proficiency in both scoring and assisting at this stage of development.

For now, Munoz is expected to serve as a strong backup option who could challenge Cody Gakpo for a place on the left wing, especially if the Dutchman’s poor form from last season continues in the Premier League.

Liverpool are also targeting additional reinforcements, with interest reported in Yan Diomande and a breakout star from the 2026 World Cup. The club are rebuilding their attack following the departure of their modern icon, Mohamed Salah, at the end of last season — a loss that has left a significant void in the squad.

Victor Munoz, who scored six goals in 31 starts for Osasuna last term, was initially believed to be heading to Newcastle before Liverpool intervened late in the process.

Transfer insider David Ornstein has confirmed reports of Munoz’s move to Anfield after the Reds made a last-minute move to secure his signature.

Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, conducted Munoz’s medical in the United States as part of a swift and decisive pursuit.

The Osasuna forward is recognized for his well-rounded game — not necessarily exceptional in one particular area but offering a balanced set of skills across the board, making him a valuable addition to Iraola’s new-look squad.
