After an early setback, the team rallied back with Deepika scoring twice and Deepika Soreng adding another goal, as reported in an official statement.
This victory solidified India's top position in Pool A, marking their third consecutive win against the USA, Japan, and Uruguay. The USA also advanced to the semi-finals from Pool A, finishing in second place. Uruguay's goals came from Chiara Appennino (13') and Manuela Vilar (55'), while Deepika (24', 56') and Deepika Soreng (43') were the scorers for India.
Celebrating Milestones and Comebacks
The match was particularly significant for midfielder Neha, who celebrated her 200th senior international cap with the Indian Women's Hockey Team.
Uruguay initially took the lead in the 13th minute when Chiara converted a penalty corner. However, India quickly responded, leveling the score just before halftime with a penalty corner conversion by Deepika in the 24th minute.
After halftime, India increased their intensity, creating consistent pressure. Their efforts bore fruit in the 43rd minute when Deepika Soreng scored a brilliant field goal, giving India a 2-1 advantage as they entered the final quarter.
Tense Finish and Victory Secured
Uruguay fought back, equalizing in the 55th minute through captain Manuela, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish. However, India responded swiftly, with Deepika converting her second penalty corner just a minute later, sealing the match at 3-2.
Throughout the game, India dominated the attacking play, earning seven penalty corners compared to Uruguay's two, effectively capitalizing on crucial moments to secure their comeback victory.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
With three consecutive victories under their belt, India heads into the semi-finals with high spirits, aiming for the FIH Nations Cup title and a return to the FIH Pro League. They are expected to face either Chile or Korea in the semi-finals scheduled for June 20.
