Liverpool have reportedly overtaken Newcastle United in the pursuit of Spain forward Victor Munoz, following a dramatic twist in the transfer race.
Newcastle had been leading negotiations for the Spain international and were in advanced discussions, but Liverpool moved swiftly to secure the deal.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have agreed personal terms with Munoz and activated his €40 million release clause.
Munoz has already completed his medical tests and is now set to become the first signing under Liverpool’s new manager, Andoni Iraola.
Last season, Munoz delivered an outstanding campaign with Osasuna, netting seven goals and contributing five assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
The 22-year-old was among La Liga’s most effective dribblers, averaging 2.2 successful dribbles per match — the sixth-highest figure in the entire league.
Known for his direct attacking style, Munoz frequently seeks opportunities to challenge defenders and shoot on goal. He ranked second among Osasuna’s players for both total shots and shots on target per game.
Munoz poses a consistent counter-attacking threat, often cutting inside and delivering dangerous crosses into the box.
The Spanish forward is capable of playing across the front line as well as in midfield positions, and his versatility is believed to be a key factor behind Liverpool’s decision to outmanoeuvre Newcastle for his signing.
Munoz made a memorable senior debut for Spain, scoring in a 3-0 friendly victory over Serbia in March. He is also part of Spain’s squad for the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
His addition to the squad is not expected to alter Liverpool’s pursuit of RB Leipzig attacker Yan Diomande, with the club still targeting two forwards during the current transfer window.
However, questions remain about how Munoz’s arrival could influence Cody Gakpo’s future, as the Dutch forward has recently been linked with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur.
